About
Annabel Brown (she/her) (b. 2006, England) is a Scottish artist who works primarily in painting, drawing and photography. She also works in textiles, film and performance. Through her work, Brown addresses the effects of chronic illness on her body, systemic failure in women’s health and how medical intervention can change our concept of self. Her current practice explores the effects of endometriosis treatment and how it physically changes her body and skin. While autobiographical at first glance, Brown’s work is more than an individual narrative, as she uses it for wider advocacy in women’s health.
Her family moved to Asia before she turned one, and settled in Hong Kong two years later, where she completed most of her schooling. Brown’s struggle with chronic health began when she was eleven, and her art took focus on the human body at the age of sixteen. She later received a diagnosis of endometriosis and PCOS, after seven years of waiting, the day before her eighteenth birthday. After spending three years in lockdown, her family chose to relocate back to Scotland, where she sat her A-Levels. Brown graduated with the highest grades of her year and accepted an offer to study Fine Art at Fine Art Chelsea College of Arts, University of the Arts London (2nd in the world for Art and Design in the QS World University Rankings).
